TASTING POINTS

No reservations accompanied my wide-eyed first acquaintance with the 2004 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Trois Maries, a wine based primarily on a single plot of 80-100 year old Grenache whose fruit easily stood up to its 18 months in new barriques. Black fruit preserves are mingled on the nose with amazingly intense, high-toned distilled herbal and floral essences. A silken, thickly-rich yet in comparison with the “Hugo” cuvee refreshingly fluid palate is underlain by rich toasted nut, bitter chocolate, and cocoa powder. There is a honeyed aspect to go along with the fruit confiture, almost like a cross between port and botrytis wine, along with persistent esters, liqueur-like as well as sweetly floral overtones. To call the finish “clinging” or “palate-staining” is an understatement. I’m not sure what you would eat with this, but given its price as well as its attention-grabbing personality, the best bet – at least for now – would be a solo appearance. Who knows what 7-10 years might bring. (I hope to find out!)
